Physical Properties: Sodium sulfide at room temperature is a pure colorless or slightly purple prismatic crystal. Industrial sodium sulfide often contains impurities in pink, brownish red, or earthy yellow blocks, with a rotten egg odor, corrosiveness, and toxicity; Soluble in cold water, easily soluble in hot water, almost completely hydrolyzed into sodium hydroxide and sodium hydrosulfide when dissolved in water, corrosive to copper, wood, skin, etc; Slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether; It deliquests in the air and is prone to oxidation to form sodium thioate.
Applications: Sodium sulfide is mainly used as a dehairing agent for raw hides, a pulp cooking agent, a raw material for sulfide dyes, a dye intermediate reducing agent, a fabric dyeing mordant, an ore flotation agent, and can also be used as a desulfurizer for viscose fibers, as well as raw materials for the production of sodium hydrosulfide and sodium polysulfide.
